In recent years, various tire manufacturers have launched self-repairing tires (also called self-repairing tires). Although the technologies used are different, the methods are the same, that is, a layer of polymer composite materials is attached to the inner wall of the tire to prevent tire leakage, blowout and self-repair.
Today, let's take a look at the technologies used by self-repairing tires of various tire brands.
Michelin Selfseal self-repairing technology
Michelin self-repairing tires (Selfseal) use innovative sealant technology and design. A specially formulated sealant is sprayed on the inner airtight layer of the tire. When foreign objects are inserted, the foreign objects are quickly wrapped under the pressure inside the tire. It can cover a large area of the shoulder area, effectively repairing about 80% of screws and about 90% of nails with a diameter of no more than 6 mm, providing additional protection for the tire and effectively preventing nail punctures.
Compared with run-flat technology, sealant technology does not need to increase the thickness of the tire wall, which effectively improves comfort. Not only that, this innovative technology does not require changes to the original design of the tread pattern and structure, allowing the tire to maintain various excellent performance.
ContiSeal self-repairing technology from Germany
ContiSeal self-repairing technology is a technology developed and designed by Continental that can repair tread damage by itself. When a tire is punctured by an external foreign object with a diameter of 5 mm or less, such as a nail, the technology can automatically seal the punctured hole, so that the vehicle does not need to stop at the roadside to change the tire. Even if the foreign object is out of the tire, the punctured hole can still be sealed.
Pirelli SEAL INSIDE tread dynamic instant self-repairing technology
Many traffic accidents are caused by tire leaks. SEAL INSIDE™ (dynamic instant self-repairing technology for tread), one of Pirelli's four major tire technologies, can automatically seal and repair damaged tires.
When the tire is punctured, the sealing material adheres to the foreign object that caused the tire damage. If the foreign object is still on the tire, the sealing material will form a sealed isolation ring around the object.
Goodyear sealtech self-repairing technology
Goodyear previously developed a self-repairing tire, which Goodyear called SealTech.
Simply put, there is a special mixed isolation layer inside the tire, which can automatically seal the area of the tread with a maximum diameter of 5mm to prevent tire leakage and cause tragedy.
In other words, you can continue to drive after being punctured by a small nail. Goodyear tires that have been enhanced by self-repairing technology will have the word SealTech on the side.
All major tire companies are working hard on self-repairing tires, but the self-repairing tire market is not hot.
Self-repairing tires are said to not need to be repaired, which will give consumers an illusion that installing this one will solve the problem once and for all, and there is no need to worry about any problems with the tire, after all, it is not afraid of punctures. In this way, the tire shop's tire repair business will be affected. People have replaced self-repairing tires, and no one comes to repair tires. For current tire shops, the tire repair business is still a very important part. After all, no one will destroy their own rice bowl. Moreover, self-repairing tires are not completely puncture-proof, and they are useless for nails that are too large.
But consumers will not care about your tricks. Self-repair means not being afraid of punctures, and it can solve any kind of problem. When problems arise, they will blame the tire shop for deceiving customers and selling tires that are not puncture-proof. At that time, the tire shop will have no explanation at all, so they might as well not cause trouble for themselves. They can also earn goodwill by repairing the tire. What's more, repairing punctures has become a habit, which is the same for both tire shops and car owners.
Can self-repairing tires really work?
